Second Grade Social Studies: People Working Together
Work serves as an organizing theme for the second grade. Students learn about jobs today and long ago. They use biographies, primary sources and artifacts as clues to the past. They deepen their knowledge of diverse cultures and their roles as citizens.

Reading: Literature
Read and comprehend simple to complex literature. Ask and answer questions. Retell stories and determine the lesson or moral. Describe how characters respond to major events and challenges. Describe the overall structure of a story. Acknowledge differences in point of view of characters. Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story.
Reading: Informational
Read and comprehend simple to complex informational texts. Ask and answer questions about nonfiction text. Identify the main topic of multiparagraph text. Determine the meaning of words and phrases. Use text features (captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, diagrams, etc) to help bring meaning to the text. Identify the main purpose of a text. Compare and contrast the most important points by two texts on the same topic.
Reading: Foundational
Distinguish long and short vowels. Spell common vowel teams. Decode two syllable words with long vowels and words with common prefixes and suffixes. Read grade appropriate irregularly spelled words. Read grade level texts with sufficient accuracy and fluency (purpose and understanding, appropriate rate and expression, use context to confirm or self-correct).

Write opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives with correct organization for the text type.
Production and Distribution of Writing
Focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing both individually and collaboratively. Use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing.

Participate in shared research and writing projects. Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Demonstrate command of spoken and written English. Produce, expand and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences. Correctly capitalize proper nouns. Use commas, contractions and possessives with apostrophes. Use spelling patterns to generate words. Consult references to check spelling.

Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
Vocabulary Acquisition and Use
